Highly advanced real-time dispatching system and new IT infrastructure for Uniper
Optimal planning of power stations and the provision of balancing energy
With the new IT infrastructure and the highly advanced real-time dispatching system from KISTERS, Uniper is creating the prerequisites for controlling the power plant units in accordance with optimal deployment planning and for providing balancing energy. The KISTERS system includes, among other things, the ControlStar dispatching system, including the components for secondary and minute reserve power, as well as the Big Data component KiBiD for long-term archiving and evaluation. This IT solution for the Central European electricity market was set up with full redundancy and in accordance with current guidelines for information security.

The challenge
Both grid stability and the company’s success in the market depend on the ability to automate time-critical processes in real time. Uniper’s goal was to renew the critical, round-the-clock systems for optimising the power plant portfolio with the goal of optimal production planning, as well as the corresponding control of the portfolio, and to secure operations for the coming years with the new KISTERS system.
The solution
The solution offers the KISTERS ControlStar grid control system and the process coupling system. This includes typical SCADA functionalities for the control of power plants and control power incl. secondary and minute control power.
- The KiBiD (KISTERS Big Data) tool controls the long-term archiving and evaluation of time series.
- The communication interfaces create flexible and reliable connections to external source systems, such as scheduling and billing target systems.
- The fully redundant new IT infrastructure includes two complete system knots and ensures the highest level of security in the business processes. The system is in accordance with the latest ISMS guidelines.Uniper secures operations for the coming years with the new KISTERS system.

Information security
The entire IT infrastructure was also renewed, accompanied by internal and external security audits. The solution was hosted fully redundantly in two separate data centres and set up according to current guidelines for information security.
